Few of my local birds leave for the winter . . I often see herons standing in snow and wonder why they did not go someplace warmer !

@Ronnie 2¢: Many of the duck relatives to move to the extent that the finding of open water, which can look for food. A lot of them overwinter in places where the water does not freeze. Herons are extremely rare over the winter.

gerard1948 from Spain

A beautiful picture, they enjoy the last sunny days before the start of the migration to warmer countries. A long and tiring journey, especially dangerous with all the hunters on the road.

19 Sep 2015 10:25pm

@gerard1948: The wild live life is a great adventure. Its contribution is your own life. These live in a protected area, but like you said, their migratory journey is full of dangers. Thank you for your remark.

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

The birds are already passing by my feeders to fuel up on their flight south. Lots of birds stay here year around because of the fairly mild climate.

20 Sep 2015 2:03am

@Steve Rice: Soon it is time to high immigration. Bird enthusiasts call it the Arktika. Then move to large flocks, which can be hundreds of birds. Finland also wintering birds that survive very harsh conditions. They help by providing feeding yards and even forests.
